Rooftop distributed PV is growing fast. Commercial roofs, pitched residential roofs and carports impose different demands than utility-scale plants: limited load capacity, waterproofing sensitivity and tight working space. Clamp, mid/end clamp and grounding bolt quality directly affects safety and leakage risk.
A leaking rooftop repair costs far more than the fasteners themselves, disrupting factory production or home life. Distributed projects therefore prioritize waterproofing and reliability over low price.
Module mid/end clamps and rail bolts must be tightened to maker torque, typically 16-20N·m for M8 clamp bolts. Under-torque loosens in wind; over-torque cracks the frame. Aluminum clamps with stainless bolts are mainstream. Standing-seam roof clamps must match panel profile to avoid slipping.
Pitched tile roofs use hook-and-rail systems; penetrations through waterproof layers must be sealed with sealant and waterproof gaskets—never leave a hole unrestored.
Corrugated metal roof self-drilling screws need EPDM washers that are intact and uncracked; aged washers are a common leakage cause. For grounding, module frames, rails and supports need grounding lugs or jumpers; ground bolts must scrape through coating to expose metal for acceptable resistance.
After commissioning, regularly inspect clamp torque, clamp displacement and washer aging. Coastal and industrial sites corrode faster and need shorter re-inspection cycles. Keep torque check records and run special inspections after extreme weather like strong winds or hail.
